Priyanka’s damage control measures have failed to work

Lucknow,May 03(HS)The fire-fighting by the Congress has gone in vain .Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, far from being pleased, has accused the party of working hand-in-glove with the BJP.

The statement by party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday that weak candidates were fielded by the grand old party to eat into BJP votes had created a political storm. She took some damage control measures the next day but they have failed to work so far.

Two main opposition parties in Uttar pradesh, the BSP and the SP, are still highly critical. The SP does not believe that the Congress has fielded weak candidates in any part of the state.

Mayawati,more or less,has expressed a similar view.

Both are of the opinion that the Congress was not “cutting” BJP but alliance (SP-BSP-RLD formed before the general elections in UP) votes.

Priyanka’s statement on Thursday that She would rather die than help the BJP,too, has been taken with a pinch of salt by these two leaders and workers of the two parties.

Probably thinking that all this was not enough, Priyanka went the same day to the venue of a workers’ conference organised by the SP unscheduled and used it as a photo op.

It might have pleased party president Akhilesh Yadav. But it has certainly not gone well with Mayawati. For,she has not changed her stance.

Not sharing Priyanka’s new assurance,Mayawati accused the Congress of working to favour the BJP.”It is clear both the parties are working together against the alliance”, she said soon after Priyanka’s U-turn.

The Dalit leader has reiterated that those who vote for the Congress will be only “benefitting” the BJP.She has feared all along that Muslim vote division between the alliance and the Congress would not go in favour of the alliance.

Not only has the Congress put up candidates who would ultimately help the BJP, but made some unsavoury remarks against the Mahagathbandhan which were beneficial to the BJP,she has charged.

Mahyawati who has nursed grudges against the Congress and allied with the SP may have difference with its president Akhilesh Yadav at least on one issue–Prime Ministerial candidate. Akhilesh batted for his father Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday which she may not find easy to digest.

All does not ,therefore.seem to be well either with the grand alliance or the Congress.
