Priyanka’s Mission UP Begins With A Roadshow

Lucknow: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, new Congress general secretary, began Mission UP with a roadshow here on Monday, accompanied by party president Rahul Gandhi and incharge of western part of the state, Jyotiraditya Scindia.

It began from the airport with much fanfare to culminate at Nehru Bhawan, the party’s headquarters in the capital city.It has been tastefully decorared to mark the event. She is scheduled to be welcomed by workers at 30 points in 20-KM journey and address people at Lalbagh crossing in the middle of the town. The show will end with an address at the party headquarters.

She will not return to Delhi after the show.Priyanka will be meeting workers and leaders of in next three days. The meeting, according to party sourcs, will begin early in the mornning and continue till late in the light.Incharge of 42 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state, she will hold talks with workers of all these constituencies. These include Varanasi which is being represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gorakhpur, chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s home turf.

A party insider said, she will concentrate on 30 of these seats where the party had secured more than one lakh votes in the previous poll. Though she has campaigned for the party in the part but it was limited to two constituencies of Raebareli and Amethi represented by party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, respectively.

She has been appointed mainly to revive the party in UP,particularly the eastern part. The task is,however, not easy. She has to recover a lot of lost ground. In the previous poll it had won only two seats, both in the eastern part, and the vote- share was much below its rivals. In the recently past, the only successful year for the party was 2009 when it had bagged 21 seats. The aim is to regain those seats,if not to capture more.

But the task has been made difficult by two reasons.First, two major players, the SP and the BSP,have dumped the party. They are likely to declare their candidates by the end of this month. The SP has a stronghold in the east which will be looked after by Priyanka.

Second, the BJP is not the same as it was in 2009.Modi is an additional factor to worry the party. The BJP had bagged 71 seats in the previous poll and will leaving nothing to chance to secure a majority again. To be fair to her, it must be said that she is a crowd puller. If the listners also vote for her,the party will gain much.
